Rising costs take spark out of Goa’s traditional fireworks business

As one walks along the bylanes of the temple town of Mardol, it’s easy to miss this non-descript house that was once one of the few prominent addresses of Goa’s fireworks industry. Obscured among the row of low tiled-roof shops and houses lies the humble dwelling of the Kavlekars, which has been in the fireworks manufacturing occupation for the last three generations. There’s no signboard to proclaim its presence nor any telltale marks that would suggest its significance.
